European Union
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, Article 4
The EU AI Act makes AI literacy a legal requirement
Think of it as a driver's licence for AI.
Since the beginning of 2025, the EU AI Act has been in force. One of its core requirements is clear: every employee who works with AI must be AI literate. Think of it as a driver's licence for AI. Without it, employees are not permitted to use AI tools in their professional work.
The law is currently active. From around June 2026, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens will begin enforcing compliance and issuing fines to organisations whose employees use AI without meeting the literacy requirement.

Compliance is one reason. Understanding AI is another
The real value of AI literacy goes beyond ticking a legal box. It shapes how your team uses AI every day.
AI confidently generates answers that are completely wrong. Knowing when to verify output, and when not to trust it, is a skill every user needs.
AI systems reflect the data they were trained on. Without awareness of this, teams may unknowingly rely on output that systematically favours or excludes certain outcomes.
Most public AI tools process your data on external servers. Knowing which tools are safe to use, what data must never be shared, and what GDPR requires is essential for every employee.
AI-generated content raises unresolved questions about ownership and IP. Teams need to understand what they can publish, claim, or build on, and where legal risk starts.
