NEO Beta from 1X Technologies: the future of cooking

NEO Beta, the humanoid robot from 1X Technologies, shows how AI could transform the kitchen. In a collaboration with chef Nick DiGiovanni, the robot prepares a steak and shows its potential as a kitchen assistant.

AI and robotics are advancing at a rapid pace. With its humanoid robot NEO Beta, 1X Technologies has taken a big step toward automating everyday tasks. But how far can an AI-driven robot really go? In a recent demonstration, NEO Beta showed it can cook, side by side with chef Nick DiGiovanni. The question that follows: is this the future of kitchen automation?

NEO Beta as a kitchen assistant

In a recent video on Nick DiGiovanni's YouTube channel, NEO prepared a steak. While NEO Beta completed every task, from seasoning the steak to flipping it and taking it out of the pan, the robot still needed help turning on the stove.

1X Technologies emphasises that the main challenge for fully autonomous cooking is the volume of input data NEO Beta receives. The robot is equipped with multiple sensors that drive an AI system. 1X uses an approach they call 'embodied learning': a teleoperator connects to the robot and demonstrates how a task should be performed.

NEO Beta should be able to operate autonomously in many scenarios, but a teleoperator can step in at any moment if needed. The more data, the better NEO Beta learns and the more it can act independently.

The future of robots in the kitchen

While this culinary demo is impressive, 1X Technologies stresses that cooking will not be a standard feature of NEO Beta any time soon. The robot first needs more experience with safer tasks before it works with sharp knives or hot surfaces. That said, the possibilities are not limited. An AI-driven kitchen assistant could be a valuable addition to both home kitchens and professional ones.

The future of AI robots at home

The collaboration between NEO Beta and chef Nick DiGiovanni offers a fascinating glimpse of the future of AI in the kitchen. Fully autonomous cooking robots are not here yet, but this demo shows we are moving closer to a future where AI and robotics become an integral part of daily life.

What do you think? Would an AI chef be a useful addition to your kitchen?
